Hurumanu - My Investigation on climate change

ACIDIFICATION

DEFINITION:When the oceans obsorb CO2 and the oceans become acidic

What is happening to the oceans?
  • As the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rises, the oceans absorb a lot of it. In the ocean carbon dioxide reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid. This causes the acidity of seawater to increase.

What does this do to shellfish?
  • When carbon dioxide dissolves in water, it becomes an acid. That acid can be lethal to baby oysters, preventing them from forming shells Eudeline said. And it's not just oysters at risk lobsters crabs clams and coral reefs are feeling the effects of ocean acidification too.

HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACIDIFICATION OF OUR OCEANS?

  • Climate change creates carban dioxide and that makes the oceans suck up the CO2 in the air witch causes the acidity of the seawater to increase.

DEFINITION:When trees are cut down and not replaced

What are trees used for?

  • Trees provide them shelter from the weather and from enemies. Trees provide food in the form of fruits, nuts, leaves, bark, and roots. Even dead trees provide shelter and food for many insects. You also use them to make furniture and paper

HOW DOES DEFORESTATION AFFECT THE CLIMATE?

It keeps carbon dioxide in the air and carbon helps climate change

ICE CAP MELT

DEFINITION: ICE CAP Melting

If all the ice melted what would happen?

All the fish would probably die and we would haver no fish left

HOW DOES ICE CAP MELT AFFECT CLIMATE CHANGE?

The primary cause of this phenomenon is ice-albedo feedback, whereby melting iceuncovers darker land or ocean beneath, which then absorbs more sunlight, causing more heating.

NEW BUILDING FEELINGS

My feelings about the new buildings

Hello Fellow Bloggers today we are doing a blog post about the new Kahui you will see the questions we had to answer down below.

Our Kahui is called Tīeke it's maori for Saddle Back which is a bird.

All the new buildings are named after birds

When I walked into the new buildings I saw
The colours on the walls
The old tables
The new fans
The kitchens
The new carpet
The new tv's

When I walked into the new buildings I thought
That it looked cool
That it smelt good
That it was cool that they had t1 t2 t3 t4 t5 t6 t7 t8 t9 t10 t11 t12 t13 t14 and t15
That it was cool how it was so colourful
When I walked into the new buildings I felt

Hurumanu - Science Laboratory introduction

Aim: To learn about  the expected behaviour in a science laboratory.

Our R9 Class Treaty

  1. Quiet voices
  2. Sitting with appropriate people
  3. Not fidgeting
  4. Respecting equipment
  5. Not disrupting
  6. Making good choices

  1.   Follow the instructions given to you by the __________ .
  2.   You must not enter the laboratory without your ________.
  3.   Report all ____________ to your teacher.
  4.   You must never eat or drink in a ____________ .
  5.   _______ must be worn at all times.
  6.   If you spill something you should tell your _________ immediately.
  7.  You should wash your hands after every _______ activity.
  8. You should know what you are doing. If in doubt ______ your teacher.
  9. Never taste or ______ chemicals.
In your group, discuss how the following scenarios could be dangerous.
  1. Not putting your bag under your desk.
  2. Running around in the laboratory.
  3. Not wearing shoes in a laboratory.
  4. Shaking a test tube with your thumb over its mouth?
How do we work in this laboratory?
  1. Beginning and End of class: Lining up, Entry, Seating,
  2. Equipment tray: equipment list and details.
  • Test tube - This is used  for experiments using liquids. They have a bung that can be placed in the top. Test tubes sit in a test tube rack.
  • Conical Flask - This is used for experiments with liquid up to 150 ml. The flask has a rubber bung for the top and the glass is heat proof.
  • Glass Stirring rod - This is a 20cm glass rod used to stir and mix any liquids together.
  • Test tube tongs - These are used to hold a hot test tube after an experiment.
  • Spatula - This is for holding very small amounts of chemical powders.
  • Funnel - used to channel liquids into a smaller container.
  • Measuring Cylinder - This is used to measure liquids for experiments. The liquids will be poured into a beaker or test tube once measured out.

Hurumanu - Decomposition

Decomposition

Aim: To learn about the rate that different materials decompose.

Hypothesis:

-Bananas
-White styrophone
-Paper
-Bread
-Water

Materials:

  1.   4 Test tubes
  2.   Banana(x1)
  3.   Bread(x1)
  4.   Styrophone(x1)
  5.   Paper(x1)
  6.   Test tube rack(x1)
  7. 4 Rubber Bung
  8. Water
Steps:
  1.   Get 4 test tubes and place them in the test tube rack.
  2.   Get the Banana, Bread, Styrophone and Paper and place them in each test tube.
  3. Place a bung on each test tube so it is closed.
  4.   Make sure the test tube is big enough for each strip of materials to fit in.
  5.   That is done and see if they change over the weeks and the colour they change into.
  6.   Record them on the table you made for each week.
  7. Plus: Add half a test tube of water to the bread.

Findings:

Today in CIP we did a DLO and I didn't get to do a DLO because I got kicked from a slide but anyways we

How are we going to spread our message to the community?

We are going to spread the message by putting up posters so that everyone can see our objective

Who do you think will get involved

I think that it is just going to be Hornby high school and Terre cycle that will get involved because Terra cycle is taking pens for dollar donations

How many kgs do you predict we will collect

I think that we will collect around 783 kgs because I had one of these at my old school And we did it for glue sticks and we got 526

What should we do with the donation money that we get from terra cycle

I think we should buy more equipment for the school
